Flora Bay Farm started in 2014 by Courtney Smith (Farmer/Artist/Owner) and Steve Sawyer (Farm Advisor/Writer) is on 6 acres of mostly wooded land south of Carbondale. Offering a diverse landscape of flowers, herbs (culinary and medicinal), fruits and vegetables, with the focus on heirloom and regionally adapted plants. Native plantings and habitat areas help keep our farm wild, pollinator and wildlife friendly! Since 2017, Flora Bay Farm received the 'Certified Naturally Grown' certification. Courtney volunteers as a Senior Remote Inspector for Certified Naturally Grown, gaining and sharing knowledge about small farms all over the U.S. By helping to increase the availability of local foods and goods, the goal is to help build a more robust regional food system. Courtney is on farm full time, working also as a freelance designer and with her family's food business. In her spare time (as if), Courtney herds cats, renovates small cottages and dabbles in the arts. Steve works off-farm at SIU and writes creative stories and screen plays.
